The Rays That We Reject

"We learn that it is not the rays that our bodies absorb, but those which they reject, that give them the colors they are known by; and in the same way people are specialized by their dislikes and antagonisms, whilst their goodwill is looked upon as no attribute at all." - Thomas Hardy

I have this crack theory. Seeing how Tarrlok reacted to being compared to Amon… doesn’t almost seem like…

SIBLING RIVALRY.

It’s pretty easy to see now that Yakone and Tarrlok are related, but if you think of build and speech-making abilities, perhaps Yakone had another son. Amon was born without powers, forever a disgrace in the eyes of his father, so he “tried again” and had Tarrlok, a proper bender. Yakone has a close relationship with the spirit world, giving him his terrifying abilities which he would pass down to Tarrlok. Amon, jealous or Tarrlok and hating his father, goes to the spirits to get the one thing that can stop them- the ability to take away their bending. Both brothers now are struggling to gain control of the city, working to destroy each other out of this sense of competition. Tarrlok is trying to achieve what his father always dreamed, Amon is trying to destroy that dream, but is in his own twisted way also fulfilling it.

I’m probably wrong. But still.

*mindblown*
